Hypocrisy is a melodic Death Metal band from Ludvika, Sweden, formed in 1991 by Mastermind Peter Tägtgren. They started as a traditional Death Metal band, but soon started to incorporate melodic elements in their sound. To this day Hypocrisy released twelve full length albums, four EPs, two demos, two compilations, two live releases and four singles. Albums like Penetralia, The Fourth Dimension or The Final Chapter are under my most heard albums ever.
Black Metal logos often follow the same established design guidelines. Among them are a volitional bad legibility, black letter references, satanic or antichristian elements like inverted crosses or pentagrams and dark ornamental elements like thorns or spikes. But one simple form can be found in a lot of these logos: the circle. Of course not always as a complete shape, but rather as a grid the logos are based on.
Bloodbath is a Death Metal supergroup from Stockholm, Sweden, founded in 1998. And the term supergroup isn’t exaggerated (at least for Death Metal standards, not Lady Gaga standards): The founding members were Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) on vocals, Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity, Nightingale, etc.) on drums, Anders “Blakkheim” Nyström (Katatonia, Diabolical Masquerade) on guitar, and Jonas Renkse (Katatonia, October Tide) on bass. In 2005 Åkerfeldt
Time for another Death Metal legend: Dismember. One of the forefathers of Swedish Death Metal (alongside Entombed) formed in 1988 and unfortunately split up in October 2011. After four demos (Dismembered in 1988, Last Blasphemies in 1989, Rehearsal in 1989 and Reborn in Blasphemy in 1990) the band has released eight full length albums (among them classics like 1991’s Like an Ever Flowing Stream, 1995’s Massive Killing Capacity or 1997’s Death Metal). Their classic logo is pure symmetric gold. Perhaps because its outer shape looks a bit like the batsignal … Anyway, just for nostalgia, here’s Casket Garden’s music video from 1995. No symmetric content at all, but I don’t care.
Moonspell is a Portuguese Black/Gothic Metal band formed in 1992. They have released nine albums to this day with the recently released Alpha Noir/Omega White being the latest one. Moonspell’s original logo highlights the band’s Black Metal heritage with an integrated pentagram and a thorn like illustration. Very interesting in the old logo is the use of double Metal Descenders in both “L”s and the “M”. But it still isn’t a raw and brutal Black Metal logo by being rather ornamental and filigree. Their current logo is simpler, better readable and less explicit of the band’s musical direction. It fits to the development of the band as the old Black Metal logo wouldn’t represent Moonspell’s musical output today.
Ok, I admit it. I primarily post Spawn of Possession’s great logo design for one reason: To emphasize the pure awesomeness of their latest release Incurso. This album is digitally rotating in my playlist since its release. Everyone who loves Death Metal technically cutting-edge without loosing memorability and structures will probably get an instant stiffy with Incurso. Unfortunately i can’t post Incurso’s cover artwork – although it’s pretty awesome – because it’s simply not symmetric.
Anyway. Their logo artwork is also quite nice. The type is centered and surrounded by spikes and ornamental thorns. And for Metal standards the legibility is really good. But enough for now, I have to listen to Incurso again.
Rotten Sound is a Grindcore band from Vaasa, Finland, and was formed in 1993. The band has released eight studio albums to this day. Their simple yet unique logo design is not strictly symmetric but based on symmetric shapes. It is really well designed and balanced and gets its brutal look through brush strokes that are impulsive but also well arranged. There is a resemblance in the technique of Chinese calligraphy. They are also really well balanced but full of energy. On the left is the sign “Ai” (done by Ouyang Xue) that can be translated as “love”. Because that’s the feeling I have for every fucking release of Rotten Sound.
