Enslaved is a Progressive / Black / Viking Metal band from Bergen, Norway, formed in 1991 in Sveio. The band name was inspired by the Immortal demo track “Enslaved in Rot.” (source). Though Enslaved began as a typical Norwegian Black Metal band, they always incorporated song structures unusual for the genre, thus shifting towards Progressive Viking Metal. Most of the band’s imagery and lyrics relate to Norse mythology – as you can see in their logo design.
Black Metal logos often follow the same established design guidelines. Among them are a volitional bad legibility, black letter references, satanic or antichristian elements like inverted crosses or pentagrams and dark ornamental elements like thorns or spikes. But one simple form can be found in a lot of these logos: the circle. Of course not always as a complete shape, but rather as a grid the logos are based on.
Purified in Blood is a Metalcore band from Hommersåk, Norway, formed in 2003. They have released three full length albums and one EP to this day. The pictured above Flight of a Dying Sun is their latest effort released in 2012 via Indie Records. The artwork was created by Jondix Mahashakti.
Jondix is a tattoo artist who “learned a lot about oriental drawing and painting techniques in Thailand and North India” (source) as you can clearly see in Flight of a Dying Sun’s artwork.
Drautran is a Black-/Pagan-Metal band from Kiel in Germany and was formed in 1996. They have released one demo (Unter dem Banner der Nordwinde) in 2000 and a debut album called Throne of the Depths in 2007. Their interesting logo design was created by Blotan, a “writer, musician and maverick, commuting between Germany and Norway.” (source).
I just stumbled upon Krakow on Blabbermouth – and to be honest I’m quite blown away. The four-piece comes from Bergen, Norway, plays Post-Metal (is Metal dead now?) and was founded in 2005. Within a couple of months they had already recorded their first three-track demo. Inspired by bands like Mastodon, Iron Maiden, Queens of the Stone Age or High on Fire. The cover artwork depicted above is from their upcoming full length release Diin – coming in September 2012 through Dark Essence Records.
Moonspell is a Portuguese Black/Gothic Metal band formed in 1992. They have released nine albums to this day with the recently released Alpha Noir/Omega White being the latest one. Moonspell’s original logo highlights the band’s Black Metal heritage with an integrated pentagram and a thorn like illustration. Very interesting in the old logo is the use of double Metal Descenders in both “L”s and the “M”. But it still isn’t a raw and brutal Black Metal logo by being rather ornamental and filigree. Their current logo is simpler, better readable and less explicit of the band’s musical direction. It fits to the development of the band as the old Black Metal logo wouldn’t represent Moonspell’s musical output today.
Borknagar is a progressive Black Metal band from Bergen, Norway, and was founded in 1995. The band combines elements of Black, Pagan and Folk Metal to a quite unique sound. The current line-up includes some Metal veterans with Øystein G. Brun (Cronian, ex-Molested), Vintersorg (Vintersorg, Fission), Lars A. Nedland (Solefald, ex-Carpathian Forest), Jens F. Ryland (ICS Vortex) and ICS Vortex (ex-Dimmu Borgir, Arcturus, ICS Vortex). In addition the drums and percussions on Urd were performed by David Kinkade (Soulfly, ex-Malevolent Creation). To this day they have released nine studio albums (and one best of release) with Urd being the latest one – released in 2012.
