Enslaved is a Progressive / Black / Viking Metal band from Bergen, Norway, formed in 1991 in Sveio. The band name was inspired by the Immortal demo track “Enslaved in Rot.” (source). Though Enslaved began as a typical Norwegian Black Metal band, they always incorporated song structures unusual for the genre, thus shifting towards Progressive Viking Metal. Most of the band’s imagery and lyrics relate to Norse mythology – as you can see in their logo design.
Another classic one: Unleashed from Sweden. Founded in 1989 and since then devoted to Death Metal. Unleashed has released 10 albums to this day and is currently working on the eleventh one.
Their logo incorporates everything a Death Metal logo needs: Satanic reference (inverted cross), horror reference (spider webs), gore reference (blood drips) and norse reference (the upper ends of the U and D). Also I think Unleashed’s logo could be a step-bother of Cryptopsy’s logo. With Cryptopsy being the dirty and battered one. What both logos have in common is a compact outer form. Both show gory and numerous, detailled elements but still keep a tight outer form you can recognize in every size. Which is a good thing for merchandize, I think.
Manowar is an American Heavy Metal band from Auburn, NY, USA, formed in 1980. No long introduction needed. It doesn’t matter if you love or hate them (both sides have valid points), you still do know them.
This article is about the cover to their 2007 release “Gods of War”. It’s the first of a series of concept albums dedicated to different war gods from various mythologies. “Gods of War“ is centered around Odin, King of Gods and primary god of war in the Norse Mythology. All of the text on the booklet was written in the runic alphabet as well as the album’s titel on the cover (source). The cover art was done by Ken Kelly, who has also worked on artworks for Kiss, Coheed & Cambria, Rainbow as well as the most famous barbarian in fiction – Conan.
