Gojira Magma – boiling energies etched by Hibiki Miyazaki

26th of July, 2016

Gojira is a French heavy metal band from Bayonne. They have released six studio albums and three live DVDs, most recently their album Magma on June 17, 2016 through Roadrunner Records. The band isn’t easy to categorize, they shift with ease between Death Metal, Progressive Metal and Thrash Metal. Their lyrical themes are equally broad – life, death and nature play major roles in their songs and albums.

The cover artwork for Magma was created by Hibiki Miyazaki from Portland, Oregon. Hibiki is an award winning artist focussing on prints, paintings and drawings who studied at Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD. I had the chance to ask Hibiki a few questions about the idea and process of this amazing artwork.

Gorguts – Rise and Fall of the House of Wisdom

19th of July, 2016

Gorguts is a Technical Death Metal band from Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. The band was formed in 1989 and was part of the first wave of Death Metal. In 2013 I wrote a post about their fantastic release Colored Sands, a concept album about the Tibetan culture and history (Here’s the link to the article).

In 2016 Gorguts still surprises with exceptional music and a concept and topic that’s more than unusual for today’s Metal. Pleiades’ Dust is a concept EP consisting of a single track that lasts for more than 30 minutes. “A long narrative composition, that was not written with the intention of being edited in segments.” as Gorguts frontman Luc Lemay says about the EP.

Oceano – Aliens, Da Vinci and life itself

3rd of April, 2015

Oceano is a Deathcore band from Chicago, IL, USA, formed in 2006. The band has released four albums to this day with Ascendants being the latest one – released in March 2015 via Earache Records.

Ascendants is an album conceptually centered around the opinions and views of Oceano’s lead singer Adam Warren about human origins, life itself and the concept of reality. For example the opener Nephilim is about the ancestry of humanity or The Dulce Incident is about the correspondent incident in an alleged secret alien underground facility.

Gorguts – Colored Sands. A sponge for Tibet.

Gorguts is a Technical Death Metal band from Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. The band was formed in 1989 and was part of the first wave of Death Metal with its debut Considered Dead from 1991 (for which Chris Barnes – then Cannibal Corpse, now Six Feet Under – did a few backing vocals) and their 1998 Masterpiece Obscura. The’ve released 5 studio albums to date with Colored Sands being the latest – released this year via Season of Mist.

Wormed – Exodromos. Does Phlegeton dream of electric sheep?

20th of July, 2013

Wormed is a Technical Death Metal band from Spain formed in 1998. They are signed to Willowtip Records and have released two full length albums to this day. Exodromos, the album depicted in this post, is the latest one released in March 2013. Wormed are an outstanding Death Metal band by not following the given visual, textual, musical and conceptual rules and mechanics. They don’t use the common gore aesthetics but rather tell stories of science fiction, quantum physics and space exploration. Mainly responsible for this refreshingly new angle on Death Metal is Wormed’s lead singer Phlegeton. Their music fits perfectly by being highly technical and advanced using dissonant dynamic riffing.
