Gorguts – Rise and Fall of the House of Wisdom

19th of July, 2016

Gorguts is a Technical Death Metal band from Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. The band was formed in 1989 and was part of the first wave of Death Metal. In 2013 I wrote a post about their fantastic release Colored Sands, a concept album about the Tibetan culture and history (Here’s the link to the article).

In 2016 Gorguts still surprises with exceptional music and a concept and topic that’s more than unusual for today’s Metal. Pleiades’ Dust is a concept EP consisting of a single track that lasts for more than 30 minutes. “A long narrative composition, that was not written with the intention of being edited in segments.” as Gorguts frontman Luc Lemay says about the EP.

Fuck The Facts – Symmetry High-Five

15th of June, 2012

Fuck the Facts is a Canadian Grindcore band from Ottawa, Ontario, formed in 1998. The band has released nine full length albums with 2011’s Die Miserable (released through Relapse Records) being the latest one. The cover artwork featured in this article is part of 2006’s Stigmata High-Five – the band’s debut on Relapse Records. The symmetry in this artwork is based on an orthogonal grid. 16 grungy square paper pieces arranged in a big square giving us a perfect x- and y-axis for the symmetry. The artwork was created by Melanie Mongeon, who’s also responsible for  the band’s lead vocals since 2002.

Bison BC - Feature

Bison B.C. – Symmetry B.C.

19th of February, 2012

Bison B.C. is a Canadian Sludge Metal band from Vancouver. Their second (third, if you count their 2007 EP/LP Earthbound) full length album was released in 2010 through Metal Blade Records. Honestly, this record might be my most-listened to album since 2010. I’m actually not the biggest Sludge fan (I’m more a Death Metal guy), but this record and their live performance in Hamburg’s Hafenklang in that year gave me an instant erection that’s just not ebbing away. Just listen to Stressed Elephant, the opener of the release and you’ll know what I mean.
