Metal logos reflect the essence of a band’s (or in the case of Guttural Death: a webzine’s) music and attitude. They can be dark, brutal, aggressive and horrifying, but at the same time beautifully crafted with an amazing eye for details. It’s the beauty in the chaos that makes Metal logos stand out. Enslaved is a Progressive / Black / Viking Metal band from Bergen, Norway, formed in 1991 in Sveio. The band name was inspired by the Immortal demo track “Enslaved in Rot.” (source). Though Enslaved began as a typical Norwegian Black Metal band, they always incorporated song structures unusual for the genre, thus shifting towards Progressive Viking Metal. Most of the band’s imagery and lyrics relate to Norse mythology – as you can see in their logo design.
Comaworx is an art and design studio from the Netherlands that’s been around for quite some time. Comaworx has done amazing artworks for several well known bands like Rotting Christ, Spearhead, Deathspell Omega, Necrophagia, Bunkur or Varathron. I’ve had the chance to ask Manuel Tinnemans – the head and pen behind Comaworx – a few questions about his work.
Black Metal logos often follow the same established design guidelines. Among them are a volitional bad legibility, black letter references, satanic or antichristian elements like inverted crosses or pentagrams and dark ornamental elements like thorns or spikes. But one simple form can be found in a lot of these logos: the circle. Of course not always as a complete shape, but rather as a grid the logos are based on.
