Enslaved is a Progressive / Black / Viking Metal band from Bergen, Norway, formed in 1991 in Sveio. The band name was inspired by the Immortal demo track “Enslaved in Rot.” (source). Though Enslaved began as a typical Norwegian Black Metal band, they always incorporated song structures unusual for the genre, thus shifting towards Progressive Viking Metal. Most of the band’s imagery and lyrics relate to Norse mythology – as you can see in their logo design.

Norse mythology is the study of the myths told in Germanic countries (Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Faroe Islands) during the pre-Christian times, especially during the Viking Age (source). Enslaved’s logo design seems to be a best of Norse references. Its general appearance consists of floral and decorative ornaments incorporating different figurative elements.

For example the axe blades on the logo’s Metal Descenders or the dragon heads on top of the logo. Dragon heads often were part of scandinavian longships in the viking age to scare enemies – in form of dragon-shaped prows. But the dominant element in Enslaved’s logo design is the hammer in its centre – Mjölnir.

MjölnirIn Norse mythology, Mjölnir is the hammer of Thor, a major god associated with thunder. Mjölnir is depicted as one of the most fearsome weapons, capable of leveling mountains. Mjölnir simply means “crusher”, referring to its pulverizing effect. The word might be related to the Russian word молния (molniya) and the Welsh word mellt (both words being translated as “lightning”). This fits to the idea that Thor, being a god of thunder, might have used lightning as his weapon (source).
