Dislike is a Grindcore band from Croatia formed in 1997 – with the main aim “to play classic dis crust beats (Doom, Discharge, Hiatus, …)” according to the band. They are one of the rare bands to use horizontal symmetry in their logo. The general design reminds of Illogicist’s logo while being less orthogonal and adding the symmetry. Thereby being a
The Algorithm is a music project of the French musician Rémi Gallego, combining elements of Progressive Metal with electronic music, of which the UK Metal Hammer said it was “one of the most insanely exciting bands around”. Gallego chose the band name to highlight the music’s complexity and its electronic nature in general (source). The logo design, that perfectly reflects the modern take on the musical genres The Algorithm is based on, was made by Jens Schellhase, a German designer from Cologne. The symmetry and sharp lettering reminds of the Metal genre while the slightly shifted complementary colors of the logo – creating a pseudo-3D-effect – represent the modern electronic influences.
Metal logos reflect the essence of a band’s (or in the case of Guttural Death: a webzine’s) music and attitude. They can be dark, brutal, aggressive and horrifying, but at the same time beautifully crafted with an amazing eye for details. It’s the beauty in the chaos that makes Metal logos stand out. Katalepsy is a Slam Death Metal band from Moscow, Russia, formed in 2004. They just released their fourth output Autopsychosis via Unique Leader Records. I not only love the record but also their logo design.
It’s highly symmetrical, incorporates Metal Descenders, is only legible to the patient and still has a modern feel due to its thick outline. The “l” in the middle is the y-axis for the symmetry and extended in height. But what’s really interesting are the thorny outgrowths coming out of the letters. They are remindful of ice crystals in the winter – in their shape, arrangement and direction. As an experiment it might be interesting to form the Katalepsy letters out of wire and place them outdoors over winter. Let’s see how nature interprets that logo.
Enslaved is a Progressive / Black / Viking Metal band from Bergen, Norway, formed in 1991 in Sveio. The band name was inspired by the Immortal demo track “Enslaved in Rot.” (source). Though Enslaved began as a typical Norwegian Black Metal band, they always incorporated song structures unusual for the genre, thus shifting towards Progressive Viking Metal. Most of the band’s imagery and lyrics relate to Norse mythology – as you can see in their logo design.
